Islander James Luckman will be part of the ‘Wightlink’ Wizards in 2018. James, who resides on the Island, a lifelong speedway fan and a regular student rider at My First Skid speedway school, can now achieve the dream and ride for an Island based speedway team.
New Wizard James said, “My dad took me to my first speedway meeting at Bradford to watch the world semi-final. I was 12 and at the age of 15, I wrote to Newcastle Diamonds, my local club, and asked for a trial even though I did not have a bike! I visited Olle Nygren’s training school twice and wrote one of his bikes off with a heavy crash.
At the grand age of 25 I bought my first bike and rode in Southern Track meetings at Kings Lynn, Scunthorpe and Rye House. Now, at the age of 42 I have now realised a lifelong dream and have been asked to join a real speedway team. This has only been possibly by having My First Skid on the island. My confidence of handling a speedway bike has grown with regular track time and some top tips from Barry Bishop, Martin Widman and the team. To be asked to be part of any team is an honour but more so for the ‘Wightlink’ Wizards.”
Wizards Co-promoter Barry Bishop added, “James has been part of My First Skid from day one. He has a brilliant attitude to speedway and is always part of the team even when he isn’t riding. James' son Charlie is also showing great interest in being a speedway rider, so we hope that they will both continue to inspire more riders to improve their skills and progress via My First Skid. James has now realised a lifelong dream to be selected for a speedway team and we hope he takes it with both hands and progresses even further.”
