Upright Championship Takes Centre Stage

Having been frustrated by poor weather for the past two weeks, the Wightlink Warriors management will be hoping for a dry day as they prepare the circuit at the Smallbrook Stadium ready for racing this Thursday (10 August).

This week’s action features the Nora British Upright Championship sponsored by Freelance Installations with sixteen riders competing over twenty heats with everyone using the traditional and original style of upright speedway motor that have now given way to the ‘laydown’ engine in general use today.

Wightlink Warriors co-owner Barry Bishop said,

“Last season we had magnificent support from within the sport, from our main sponsor Freelance Installations and from supporters on the terraces not to mention the ever-growing band of riders in the upright fraternity who welcomed the chance to compete in a meaningful meeting conducted in true race conditions. These riders take absolute pride in maintaining their classic machines in tip-top condition as those attending the meeting will see.

This week we will do it again and whilst the weather has disrupted some of the qualification that had been planned, we are still able to present a full and enthusiast field of competitors who will revel in the chance to go elbow-to-elbow with their peers.

We will also integrate another six-heat training and development match as our Wightlink Wizards face up to stiff opposition from a team representing the junior Cradley Heathens. It’s another bumper programme for everyone to enjoy”.

The line-up for the Nora British Upright Championship is expected to include Edward Kennett, Nigel Flatman, Dean Felton, Wayne Broadhurst, Keith Cornell, Roy Miller, Shaun Bickley, Ben Phillips, James Major, Giles Dismore, Nigel Coates, Ian Leverington, Mark Anderson, Andy Hickman, Graham Knowler, and Jon Freeman.

Gates at the Smallbrook Stadium open at 5.15pm with the main event starting at 7.00pm. Pre-booking is not required with cash or card accepted at the turnstile.

The club are always happy to receive good luck messages or dedications to be read out during the course of the meeting and this can best be done by logging on to the Warriors website (www.warriorsspeedway.com) scrolling to the bottom of the page and filling in the preset form available there.
