ISLE OF WIGHT 'Warriors' vs EASTBOURNE 'Eagles'
National Trophy : 07/06/2018
Warriors Need To Clip The Eagles Wings
The Isle of Wight ‘Wightlink’ Warriors speedway team entertain Eastbourne Eagles for the second time this season when the Sussex side visit the Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde in a National Trophy fixture on Thursday.
The initial encounter, a first round Knock Out Cup tie, produced plenty of hard fought, close action that saw the Eagles eventually run out six point winners on the night. They have since beaten Coventry in round two of the competition and are well on the way to retaining the Cup for a fourth successive season.
For this meeting the visitors will be without the services of influential second string Charley Powell (collar bone injury) and reserve Charlie Brooks (taking school examination), however the Eagles heat-leader trio of Georgie Wood, Tom Brennan and Mark Baseby have enjoyed good early season form and with exciting teenager Jason Edwards putting four points on his starting average the home side will need to be on top form if they are to clip the Eagles wings.
Warriors’ task will be helped by the very welcome return from injury of Ben Morley who has recovered from his wrist dislocation and Scott Campos who is ok to resume following the shoulder stinger sustained two weeks ago. With the Warriors management still considering how best to fill Adam Portwood’s reserve vacancy, they offer another opportunity to Jamie Bursill to guest in this meeting.
Co-promoter said, “After the disappointment of last week’s rained off meeting, not to mention our heavy defeat at Mildenhall on Sunday, it will be good to get on to home shale again and welcome Ben and Scott back into the side. And they return against one of the best sides in our league so no easy comebacks at all. In addition to the home meeting against the Eagles, we go to Plymouth on Friday for a league meeting and so this week the management team will be working hard with the riders to restore confidence and generate a belief in ourselves that will see us back to winning ways”.
Eagles Fly High As Warriors Struggle
Isle of Wight 37 Eastbourne 53
The Isle of Wight ‘Wightlink’ Warriors are still looking for a win in this season’s National Trophy tournament after Eastbourne Eagles sailed away from the Island as comfortable winners of tonight’s speedway meeting in front of a healthy crowd.
The Eagles arrived on the back of a disappointing defeat at Birmingham last night and it certainly appeared that some strong words had been delivered to their team as they quickly set about establishing their authority on the night. An all round team performance that featured a number of good passes from the back was led by former Warrior Mark Baseby alongside impressive teenager Tom Brennan.
In dusty conditions, Warriors relied heavily on returnee Ben Morley who posted four wins in his 14 points haul plus the fastest time by a home rider this year, but sadly no other Island rider could take the chequered flag which against a team of the quality of Eastbourne was always going to create difficulties.
Warriors: Ben Morley 14, Danno Verge 3+1, Scott Campos 6, Chris Widman 5+1, Ben Hopwood 7, Jamie Bursill 0, Shaun Tedham 2+1.
Eagles: Georgie Wood 7+1, Jason Edwards 8+1, Tom Brennan 11, Charley Powell 6+1, Mark Baseby 13, Nick Laurence 3+1, Kelsey Dugard 5.
