Wizards Go For Girl Power

‘Wightlink’ Wizards have added Islander Steph Whitlock to their 2018 Southern Development League (SDL) squad. Steph, who is from the Island, and her family have always been involved in the speedway since it started on the Island. A thrilled Steph said, “It’s a dream come true to be a part of the ‘Wightlink’ Wizards SDL set-up! I’ve been an avid speedway fan since I was a young child and being part of a team was something I could only dream about until now! I only sat on a speedway bike for the first time just over a year ago and now being in the team I can develop as a rider even more. I cannot wait for it to start! I’m showing that us girls can be a part of the sport as well!” ‘Wightlink’ Wizards Co-Promoter Barry Bishop added, “The organisers of the SDL have rightly recognised the uniqueness of the Island and the impact that the My First Skid speedway school is having. As a result the Wizards have been granted special permission to name a squad of eight with the number seven and eight riders in place to gain a little more speed and confidence from valuable track time. This has opened the door to more MFS students and it is absolutely a dream come true to add Steph, another Islander, to the team and equally as important a female rider. Steph has really come on a lot in a year and I am sure that being part of the squad will help her no end to improve herself as a rider. I hope that Steph becomes an inspiration for more women to take part in speedway.”
